John A. Schoppe | Painting contractor, 64

John A. Schoppe, 64, of Blue Bell, a painting contractor, retired accountant, and Vietnam War veteran, died Tuesday of heart failure at his home.

Mr. Schoppe graduated from Abington High School and then worked as a clerk at Insurance Co. of North America in Philadelphia. From 1963 to 1966 he served in the Army and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam.

After his discharge, he returned to INA, where he met his future wife, D. Lynne Morgan. They married in 1967, and in that year he became an accountant for Pitcairn Trust Co., an investment advisory service firm in Jenkintown.

After retiring in 1994, he established John A. Schoppe House Painters in Blue Bell.

As a teenager, Mr. Schoppe was a volunteer with the Abington Fire Company. He later was president of the Third District Fire Company in Bristol. Since 1987 he had been a member of the Centre Square Fire Company and was its vice president. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 676 in Glenside.

His passion was golf, his wife said. He also enjoyed playing craps in Atlantic City and on annual trips to Las Vegas, she said.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schoppe is survived by his father, John L. Schoppe; sons Jeffrey and David; a sister; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Urban Funeral Home, 1111 S. Bethlehem Pike, Ambler. The funeral will follow at 10 Monday.
