A. Barton Lewis | Mortgage banker, 82

A. Barton Lewis, 82, of Radnor, a mortgage banker, died of Parkinson's disease Monday at Devon Manor.

For 41 years, Mr. Lewis headed A. Barton Lewis & Co., a mortgage brokerage in Philadelphia. He secured financing for major construction and restoration projects on the East Coast, including Two Penn Center and 1818 Market Street in Philadelphia, the Barbizon Hotel in New York City, Union Station in Washington and $56 million for commercial property and harbor facilities in Nantucket, Mass. He retired in 2003.

Mr. Lewis grew up in Philadelphia and Wilmington. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and a master's degree in business administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

After working for a year as an engineer, he joined the mortgage loan department of Penn Mutual Life Co. From 1955 until 1962, he was president of Republic Mortgage Co. in Philadelphia.

Mr. Lewis served on the boards of Friends Central School, the Southeastern Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Technion Society, which supports Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

He was former chairman of the U.S. Committee on Ocean Policy and served on the committee that monitors the implementation of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Seas.

Mr. Lewis enjoyed sailing and was a member of the Brigantine Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club in Essington.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Marjorie Bilk Lewis, and a daughter, Julia.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Radnor Friends Meeting, 610 Conestoga Rd., Ithan.
