John Weber | Businessman, 96

John Weber, 96, the owner of brick-pointing and water-proofing companies and a soccer enthusiast, died of pulmonary disease Thursday at Paul's Run Retirement Community in Northeast Philadelphia, where he had lived since 1996. He was a longtime resident of the Feltonville section of Philadelphia.

Born in Brewerytown, Mr. Weber quit school after the sixth grade to become a mason's apprentice. In 1938, he founded John Weber Brick Pointing in Feltonville. He also founded the Water Proofing Contracting Association of Philadelphia. He retired in 1998.

Mr. Weber helped found the United Soccer League in Pennsylvania in the 1960s. He traveled to World Cup championship games in London, Rome, Paris and Los Angeles. He also was a member of the United German Hungarian Club in Oakford, a sports and social organization.

After World War II, Mr. Weber helped displaced people find jobs and homes in this country, said his son, John.

In addition to his son, Mr. Weber is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife of more than 60 years, Anna Schmidt Weber, died in 2001.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd., where a funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne.
