Raymond J. Murphy | Lower Merion officer, 69

Raymond J. "Murph" Murphy, 69, of Bryn Mawr, a Lower Merion police officer for 28 years, died of complications from lung cancer Tuesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Mr. Murphy graduated from Lower Merion High School, where he was a standout basketball player. He then served in the Army in Texas.

After his discharge, he was an emergency medical technician for the Narberth Ambulance Corps and also volunteered with the Narberth Fire Company. In 1963, he joined the Lower Merion Township Police Department. He retired in 1991. Everyone in the township knew him, his daughter Julia said. He was outgoing and was always offering help - whether it was a ride or other assistance - to his neighbors, she said.

Mr. Murphy enjoyed daily gym workouts and riding his bike along the river drives in Philadelphia.

He and his wife, Susan Shapiro Murphy, had two children before separating in 1978. She died in January.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Murphy is survived by another daughter, Stephanie; a brother; and his longtime companion, Kathleen C. Monahan.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church, 210 N. Narberth Ave., Narberth. Friends may call at 9:30 a.m.
