Hugh Jarrett | Backup for Presley, 78

Hugh Jarrett, 78, a backup singer for Elvis Presley, has died. Mr. Jarrett died Saturday of injuries suffered in an auto accident, according to Northside Chapel Funeral Directors & Crematory in Roswell, Ga.

Mr. Jarrett died Saturday of injuries suffered in an auto accident, according to Northside Chapel Funeral Directors & Crematory in Roswell, Ga.

Mr. Jarrett had lived in metro Atlanta since the 1960s, after a music career in Los Angeles and Nashville. From 1954-58, he was bass singer with the Jordanaires, which provided vocal backing to Presley in recordings and tours.

The Hugh Jarrett Singers provided backup on Presley's first tour after his military service ended in 1960.

Mr. Jarrett, a Nashville native, last appeared with the Jordanaires in 1997 in Memphis.

He appeared in three films starring Presley, the funeral home said.
