Barbara K. Smith | Craft artist, 70

Barbara Kowalski Smith, 70, of Bala Cynwyd, a craft artist, died of cancer April 21 at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.

A native of Passaic, N.J., Mrs. Smith played French horn in her high school marching band and violin and viola in the orchestra. She earned a bachelor's degree from Trenton State College, now the College of New Jersey.

After moving from Princeton to the Main Line in 1977, she attended Philadelphia College of Art, now University of the Arts, and took classes at Cheltenham Art Center. She later taught at the center and gave private lessons. She sold her fused-glass jewelry and stained glass at craft shows and folk festivals and was a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

Mrs. Smith was also an accomplished painter, printmaker, guitarist and folk singer and performed in schools and retirement homes with the Odyssey program of the Philadelphia Folksong Society.

In 1957, she married Beresford Smith. The couple had two daughters before divorcing. She married Robert Siegel in 1984. He died in 1996.

Mrs. Smith is survived by daughters Jennifer Lohmann and Leslie; three brothers; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, 2125 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
