Alexander V. d'Arbeloff | Former MIT chairman, 80

Alexander Vladimir d'Arbeloff, 80, an entrepreneur, a teacher, and a former chairman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's board of trustees, died Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., after an illness.

Alexander Vladimir d'Arbeloff, 80, an entrepreneur, a teacher, and a former chairman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's board of trustees, died Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., after an illness.

He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in management from MIT and later was cofounder and longtime chief executive officer of Teradyne Inc., which makes test instruments for the semiconductor industry. He became chairman of MIT Corp. in 1997 and later taught at MIT's Sloan School of Management.

With his wife, Brit, he created the Fund for Excellence in MIT Education to support teaching innovations in science and engineering. - AP
