Effy Oz, 58, of Exton, a professor at the Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies, died of a heart attack Saturday at his home. He had taken a 20-mile bicycle ride that day.

A native of Israel, Dr. Oz was a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1984 he left his position as controller of Israel Aerospace Industries to pursue a career in academia. While earning a doctorate in management information systems from Boston University, he taught at that school and at Boston College. He then taught at Wayne State University in Michigan for five years and in 1996 joined Penn State, where he taught management science and information systems.

He loved teaching, his son Sahar said, even in the summer. A scholarship in his honor is being established to benefit students at Penn State Great Valley.

Dr. Oz wrote several books, including a textbook, Management Information Systems.

Since 1974 he had been married to Narda Green Oz. When they lived in Boston, he and his wife and children would bicycle along the Charles River, and he had been planning a bike trip in Israel with his sons. He enjoyed playing racquetball with his sons, working out with his daughter, rollerblading, kayaking and canoeing. He was a fierce competitor, his son said.

In addition to his wife and son, Dr. Oz is survived by sons Ron and Noam; daughter Adi; a sister; and a granddaughter.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Kesher Israel Congregation, 1000 Pottstown Pike, West Chester. Burial will be in Haym Salomon Memorial Park, Frazer.
