George E. Haines Jr., 64, a retired teacher and coach who was an excellent golfer and squash player, died Wednesday of pneumonia at Cathedral Village in Roxborough.
Mr. Haines taught math and coached six sports at the Haverford School from 1976 until he retired in 1989. He guided his teams to a total of 17 Inter-Ac League championships in squash, golf and soccer. His 1982-83 squash team went undefeated in league play and beat a Dartmouth team that was ranked sixth in college standings.
It's hard to say which was his favorite sport.
"He loved golf, he loved squash. He was just a great coach," said his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth.
Mr. Haines, a 1965 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School on Business, also taught at Westtown School and Germantown Academy before joining the faculty at the Haverford School.
Mr. Haines grew up in North Jersey and was an accomplished amateur golfer, winning the first of his two New Jersey State Amateur titles in 1968. He qualified for the U.S. Open, in which he competed at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. Haines, who also won the New Jersey Amateur in 1979, was a scratch golfer who competed in amateurs all over the world and continued to play until about five years ago, his son, George III, said. Mr. Haines' home course was Merion.
A golf historian and writer, he contributed articles on golf to several national publications, and in 2005 he wrote the book USGA Championships Held at Merion.
In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Haines is survived by his parents, Audrey and Robert Johnson; a grandson; two sisters and a brother.
Services and burial are private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Center for Neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital, 301 S. Eighth St., Suite 4B, Philadelphia 19107.
