Joseph F. King Sr., owner of trucking firm

Joseph F. King Sr., who was involved in the family trucking business in Juniata Park for more than 50 years, an Army veteran of World War II and a man devoted to his family and church, died Saturday. He was 82 and living in Lawndale but had lived for years in Oxford Circle.

The John M. King Transportation Co. was founded by his father in 1912 and is still in the family. When his father retired in 1962, the company was taken over by Joseph and his two brothers, John M. Jr. and Samuel R.The company has been run by Joseph's son, Joseph F. King Jr., since his father retired.

Joseph King Sr. was born in Philadelphia. He graduated from North Catholic High School and entered the Army, serving in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1946.

At the height of its prosperity, his company had 20 to 25 trucks hauling general commodities.

Joseph coached basketball at the Summerdale Boys Club for 20 years.

Joseph enjoyed the South Jersey shore. For a time, the family had a pleasure at Long Beach Island from which they fished and water skiied. In later years, he and the family liked to spend time every summer in Ocean City.

He married the former Dolores Meder in 1947. She died in 1995. In 2001, he married Alvina Gordon. She died in 2005.

He also is survived by three daughters, Dolores Lauria, Denise Elliott and Deborah Gorniak; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Funeral Mass 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Martin of Tours Church, Roosevelt Boulevard and Cheltenham Ave. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham. *
