Stuart B. Silverman | Store manager, 85

Stuart B. Silverman, 85, of Downingtown, a retired department store manager, died of lung cancer Monday at home.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Mr. Silverman earned a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was on Penn's alumni board.

During World War II, he served in the Army in New Guinea.

After his discharge, he traveled abroad as an international sales representative for an industrial laundry manufacturer and then was a sales agent for L.E. Harris Insurance Co. in Washington.

In 1976, he married Clare Willis, whom he had met at a New Year's Eve party in Washington. After their marriage, they lived in Lansdowne and he was a manager for area department stores of Bamberger's. He retired in 1992 as manager of the fine jewelry department of Macy's in King of Prussia.

Mr. Silverman was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Yeadon for 10 years. He cared for his wife when she became ill, his daughter Joy McGowan said, and after her death in 1992, he supported other caregivers and served on a family caregiver advisory council in Delaware County.

Since moving to Downingtown in 2006, he was a regular at the Downingtown Senior Center, where he conducted a weekly current events class.

Mr. Silverman enjoyed visits with the staff at the Coffee Cup in Downingtown, dancing, and following the Phillies.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by daughter Lynn; stepchildren Clare, Art, Chris, Ann, and Nur Ritter; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Ruth Ann Harris.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Church, 120 St. Elizabeth Dr., Chester Springs. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill.
