Leonard A. Borkland | Scott Paper excutive, 94

Leonard A. Borkland, 94, formerly of Villanova and Cape May Court House, a retired Scott Paper Co. executive, died Sept. 10 at Waverly Heights, a retirement community in Gladwyne.

Mr. Borkland graduated from Glen-Nor High School in Glenolden.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania and worked for several companies, including the Pennsylvania Railroad, before joining Scott Paper.

During World War II, he served in the States in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps.

After his discharge, he returned to Scott and held positions in its Industrial Sales Division in Chicago, Dallas and Philadelphia.

After retiring in 1976 as assistant to the vice president of industrial sales, he moved to his summer home in Avalon with his wife, Margaret MacBride Borkland.

The couple lived in Cape May Court House from 1999 until early this month when they moved to Gladwyne.

For 10 years, Mr. Borkland served on the board of Burdette-Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Court House.

As young man, he was a champion amateur golfer.

In the late 1950s, he gave up competitive golf after hurting his back but continued to play for pleasure. He was a member of Philadelphia Country Club, Seaview Country Club, and the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor.

Mr. Borkland loved working with his hands, his wife said, and enjoyed making cherry wood furniture.

In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by a son, Donald, daughter, Cherrill Ann; three granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr.
