Martin F. Hubley Sr., 82, formerly of Glenside, a math teacher and football coach, died of heart failure Sept. 2 at Artman Lutheran Home in Ambler.
Mr. Hubley, who played high school and college football, taught math and coached football at West Reading High School for three years and at Lansdowne-Aldan High School for five years before joining the staff of Abington High School in 1957.
He taught math at the school and coached the football team for four years until becoming chairman of the math department in 1961.
When he retired in 1986, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers' of Mathematics Hall of Fame.
He kept up his interest in sports after his coaching days were over, his son, Martin Jr. said, by attending his grandchildren's sporting events and rooting for the Eagles.
He became an avid fan of Albright College football when his grandson Adam played with the team several years ago.
Though he was in failing health and had to be carried up the bleachers, he wouldn't miss a game, his son said.
Mr. Hubley graduated from Shippensburg High School, where he met his future wife, Betty Cressler.
During World War II, he served in the Navy and studied at the University of Pennsylvania in the V-12 program to train officers.
Years later, he discovered that mathematical calculations he worked on at Penn were used by the Manhattan Project to construct the atom bomb. He played football at Penn in 1945 for legendary coach, George Munger.
After his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Hubley earned a bachelor's degree and played football at Shippensburg University. He earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University.
When he retired, he became an avid cook, his son said.
He barbecued in the summer and took over holiday meal preparations, roasting the turkey for Thanksgiving and making pork and sauerkraut for New Year's Day.
In addition to his son, Mr. Hubley is survived by daughters Catherine Lauf and Mary Stillwell; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife died in 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. next Thursday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2086 Parkview Ave., Abington, Pa. 19001. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
