CBS said Mr. Brunton died Sunday in Long Island.

He began his career in broadcasting in 1956 at WICC Radio in Bridgeport, Conn., where he was news director. In 1964, he joined WCBS Newsradio 88 in New York and helped develop the all-news format.

He covered some of the biggest stories of the '60s: the subway strike, the power blackout, and the civil unrest after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.
