Forwood E. "Pete" Hanby, 75, of Huntingdon Valley, a radiologist on the staff at Abington Memorial Hospital for 37 years, died Sept. 16 of cancer at home.
Forwood E. "Pete" Hanby, 75, of Huntingdon Valley, a radiologist on the staff at Abington Memorial Hospital for 37 years, died Sept. 16 of cancer at home.
Dr. Hanby grew up on a farm in Hartsville, Bucks County. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. While earning a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he met his future wife, Joan Orant Hanby, a nurse. They married in 1959.
Dr. Hanby completed an internship and a residency in internal medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital before serving in the Air Force. From 1961 to 1963, he was a flight surgeon assigned to the Strategic Air Command at Dow Air Force Base in Maine.
After his discharge, he returned to Abington and completed a residency in radiology before joining the staff. In 1999, he received the hospital's physician-of-the-year award. He retired in 2004.
"He was considered by all who knew him to be a kind and thoughtful gentleman," his daughter, Elizabeth, said.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Dr. Hanby is survived by sons William III and Peter.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 570 Welsh Rd., Huntingdon Valley.
