William H. Conner Jr., 78,of Havertown, a retired caterer and community volunteer, died of pneumonia Friday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
William H. Conner Jr., 78,of Havertown, a retired caterer and community volunteer, died of pneumonia Friday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Mr. Conner graduated from Haverford High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College. After service in the Air Force, he joined Conner Church Supper Service, which his father established in the 1930s. The firm now, Conner Catering Service, is operated by Mr. Conner's son Donald.
A longtime volunteer with the Oakmont and Lansdowne Fire Companies, he was also active with the Seventh and Eighth District Fire Police in Delaware County. He was a past president of the Delaware County Firemen's Association and the Delaware County Fire Police Association.
In his younger years, he was a coach with the Blue Line Ice Hockey Club in Radnor and an assistant ice hockey coach for Haverford High School. More recently, he enjoyed watching his grandsons' games.
Mr. Conner was also a volunteer at Haverford Hospital and at Springfield Hospital in Delaware County.
He was a lifelong resident of Havertown and summered in Ocean City, N.J. When his wife of 47 years, Rose McIntire Conner, died in 2000, he began wintering in Venice Beach Island, Fla., and volunteered at the hospital there.
In addition to his son, Mr. Conner is survived by son William "Tre" III; daughter Kimberly Lynch; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The funeral is at noon today at D'Anjolell Memorial Home, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer.
