Joseph V. Kadish Sr. | Led credit union, 87
Joseph V. Kadish Sr., 87, retired chief executive officer of the Delco Postal Credit Union in Upper Darby, died of heart failure Tuesday in Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville.
For 20 years, until retiring in the mid-1990s, Mr. Kadish headed the credit union. Initially, he ran the operation out of an office in his home in Clifton Heights with the help of his wife. It outgrew that space and moved to a commercial building in Upper Darby.
He was dedicated to making the credit union a success, his son Ronald said. The Delco Postal Credit Union has more than 2,000 members, assets of $12 million, and seven full-time employees.
Mr. Kadish graduated from Kingston High School in Luzerne County, where he lettered in track and football. During World War II, he served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific as a tail-gunner on B-25 bombers.
After his discharge, he worked in a silk thread mill in Wilkes-Barre and then joined the Postal Service. He was employed in the Upper Darby Post Office for 25 years before heading the credit union.
Mr. Kadish was married to his former high school sweetheart, Pauline Marcovitch Kadish, for 59 years. They did everything together, including being hospitalized for heart problems at the same time several years ago, their son said. She died in 2005.
In addition to his son, Mr. Kadish is survived by another son, Joseph Jr.; a daughter, Carol LaMack; a brother; two sisters; and six grandsons.
