George Morrison, 89, a former Navy rear admiral and the father of Jim Morrison, the late frontman of the Doors, has died.

He died Nov. 17 after a fall in a Coronado, Calif., hospital, said his daughter, Anne Chewning of Thousand Oaks.

Born in Georgia, Adm. Morrison graduated from the Naval Academy and was once the youngest admiral in the nation's fleet. He was aboard the mine-layer Pruitt in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese bombing on Dec. 7, 1941.

He flew combat missions during the last year of World War II and again during the Korean War.

He oversaw naval operations during the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident, which led to an escalation of American involvement in Vietnam.

His relationship with his famous son was difficult, the New York Times noted. In The Doors by the Doors, the father is quoted as saying: "I had the feeling that he felt we'd just as soon not be associated with his career. He knew I didn't think rock music was the best goal for him." - AP
