Sister Alice Coyle, 93, an educator who trained teachers in Africa, died of heart failure Friday at the Holy Child Center in Rosemont.
Sister Alice Coyle, 93, an educator who trained teachers in Africa, died of heart failure Friday at the Holy Child Center in Rosemont.
Sister Alice graduated from John W. Hallahan High School in Philadelphia. In 1942, she professed her vows with the Sisters of the Holy Child and took the religious name Mother Mary Bridget. She earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola University in Chicago.
From 1955 to 1973, Sister Alice lived in Nigeria and Ghana, where she trained teachers; for five years, oversaw 25 primary schools in Nigeria.
She also taught and was principal in Catholic schools in Philadelphia and Illinois.
In the 1980s, Sister Alice was an administrator at the Dalton Center in New York, which supports her order's education mission.
From 1987 until her retirement in 1992, Sister Alice led the Holy Child Center, a retirement residence for members of her order.
She is survived by several cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at New Sharon Chapel, 1341 Montgomery Ave., Rosemont, where friends may call after 10.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
