Henry J. Post, 88, of Holland, Bucks County, an engineer and professional singer, died of heart failure Wednesday at St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown Township.

Mr. Post grew up in New York City. He studied voice at several music schools and with Reinald Werrenrath, a baritone at the Metropolitan Opera.

During World War II, Mr. Post served in the Army. After his discharge, he was offered a position with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus.

Instead, he sought a more secure career, his daughter Gail said, and earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

He moved to Philadelphia to work for United Engineers and for 20 years was with the Philadelphia Gas Works, retiring as chief engineer in 1982. He then was chief engineer for a decade for Kling Lindquist, an architectural and engineering firm in Philadelphia.

He continued to sing, his daughter said, and was hired as a professional baritone by several churches.

Since retiring as an engineer, he had sung popular songs from the 1940s and 1950s at more than 1,000 concerts at area retirement residences.

Mr. Post's wife, Harriet Weissman Post, was a professional cellist. The couple met in grade school and married in 1942. She died in 2000.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by two grandsons.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Joseph Levine & Sons Memorial Chapel, 4737 Street Rd., Trevose. Burial will be in Haym Salomon Memorial Park, Frazer.
