Mrs. White was born in Denver, the daughter of former University of Colorado president Robert Stearns. Her future husband was a star football player at the university.
She graduated from Vassar College and attended the University of Denver School of Social Work.
Both Whites served in the Navy in World War II. She was a decoder and a recruiter.
The Whites married in 1946. They moved to Washington in 1960 when President John F. Kennedy appointed Byron White deputy attorney general.
Kennedy appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1962, and he served for 31 years. He died in 2002. - AP
