John M. Meyers, 72, of Haverford, a retired IBM marketing manager who had a second career as vice president of the Executive Service Corps of Delaware Valley, died Thursday of kidney failure at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

During his 30 years with International Business Machines Corp., Mr. Meyers worked in marketing and sales in Philadelphia. From 1969 to 1972, he taught marketing at IBM's education center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

After retiring in 1992, he volunteered with the corps. Volunteers provide advice to nonprofits that need business plans or fund-raising assistance.

In 1997, Mr. Meyers joined the corps' staff as coordinator of education. In 2000, he was named vice president. He retired a second time in 2006.

A native of Fairport, N.Y., Mr. Meyers earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, where he quarterbacked the football team. He earned a master's degree in business from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was an Army Reserve veteran.

Mr. Meyers was a volunteer reader with the Associated Service for the Blind and served on the boards of the Philadelphia Boys Choir, the Keystone Boys Choir, and the Gladwyne Public Library. He was active with the University of Rochester Alumni Association.

Since 1959, he had been married to Mary Ann Dye Myers. They met on the tennis court in Rochester.

He made beautiful vintage-car models, his wife said, and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bridge and reading. His favorite writers were Patrick O'Brian, author of the Master and Commander, Aubrey-Maturin series, and John Updike, who died two days before Mr. Meyers. For more than 40 years, he and his family spent summer vacations in Nantucket, Mass.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Meyers is survived by a son, Andrew; a daughter, Anne Kasmer; two brothers; and three grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow at St. John Baptist Vianney Church, Youngsford Road, Gladwyne. Burial will be in Nantucket.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John P. and Emma Meyers Scholarship Fund at the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. 14627.
