Barbarann Wright, 77, former teacher and Montco GOP official

Barbarann Skelly Wright, 77, of Wallingford, a former teacher and Republican official in Montgomery County, died of metastatic colon cancer May 6 at the Vitas Hospice of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Wright earned her bachelor's degree in history from Rosemont College in 1953 and her master's degree in education from Villanova University in 1955.

She taught at the School of the Holy Child in Sharon Hill from 1953 to 1955, said her husband, Roland, and at what was then Bala Cynwyd Junior High School from 1956 to 1967.

Mrs. Wright earned her mathematics certification from Temple University in 1984 and from 1985 to 1998 taught geometry at Padua Academy, a girls' college prep school in Wilmington, where she coached field hockey and tennis.

In the 1960s, Mrs. Wright was a Republican committeewoman in Lower Merion and vice chairwoman of the Lower Merion-Narberth Republican Committee. Her husband said that during the 1964 presidential primaries she drove to Nevada to campaign for Pennsylvania Gov. William Scranton.

From the 1970s into the 1990s, she taught Sunday school at St. John Chrysostom Church in Wallingford.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Wright is survived by son James, daughters Julie Hyland and Jennifer Erickson, and seven grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Carr Funeral Home, 935 S. Providence Rd., Wallingford, and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. tomorrow at St. John Chrysostom Church, 615 S. Providence Rd., Wallingford, followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass there. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown.
