Edward F. McLaughlin, 69, of Annapolis, Md., a Philadelphia police officer in the 1960s and later an FBI agent, died of complications of dementia on May 22 at Hearts at Home, a residential-care facility in King George, Va.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. McLaughlin graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1958 and served in the Marine Corps until 1962.
Philadelphia Police Department records show that Mr. McLaughlin was an officer from 1962 to 1969, with a two-year absence. His son Patrick said that he spent part of that time with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
While a police officer, his son said, Mr. McLaughlin studied at St. Joseph's University and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
From 1971 until he retired in 1995, his son said, Mr. McLaughlin was an FBI agent. He worked in the FBI office in Philadelphia from 1978 to 1981, as well as in field offices in Alexandria, Va., Columbia, S.C., and Washington.
Earlier in his career, he had been a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Police in Philadelphia.
Besides his son Patrick, Mr. McLaughlin is survived by sons Edward F. Jr. and Joseph; a daughter, Maureen McLaughlin; 12 grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters. He also is survived by his former wife, Patricia.
Visitation was set from 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at Our Mother of Consolation Roman Catholic Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass there. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Township.
