John F. Daly, 75, a retired language professor, died of liver failure June 26 at Abington Hospice at Warminister, where he had lived for eight months.
John F. Daly, 75, a retired language professor, died of liver failure June 26 at Abington Hospice at Warminister, where he had lived for eight months.
A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Daly grew up in the Northeast and in Cheltenham. He was a longtime resident of the Rittenhouse Savoy condominiums on Rittenhouse Square.
Mr. Daly graduated from La Salle College High School in 1941. He received a bachelor of arts degree fr-om La Salle College in 1945 and later a master's degree from Middlebury College in Vermont. He did post-graduate work at Temple and Rutgers Universities in the early 1950s, said his sister Margaret Kalb.
He served in the Army from 1956 to 1958 and was based at Fort Myer, Va. After his discharge, he taught French and Spanish at high schools in Camden, Abington, and Philadelphia. He was an adjunct professor of Spanish at Community College of Philadelphia from 1966 to 1969, his sister said.
From 1969 to 1982, Mr. Daly was a professor of foreign languages at Camden County College. He retired from teaching 10 years ago.
Mr. Daly enjoyed traveling and entertaining, and was an enthusiastic theater- and opera-goer. "He was always a bon vivant and man about town in Philadelphia, and he loved being involved in everything," Kalb said.
He was a member of the executive board of the Modern Language Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity, Pi Delta Phi (the national French honor society), the Modern Language Association of America, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Valley Forge Historical Society.
In addition to his sister, he is survived by a sister and two brothers, as well as nieces and nephews.
