J. Henry Brown, 84, a retired advertising manager, died of heart failure Saturday at his Doylestown home.

J. Henry Brown, 84, a retired advertising manager, died of heart failure Saturday at his Doylestown home.

Mr. Brown grew up in Allentown, where his father, a Lutheran minister, chaired the English department of Muhlenberg College.

After earning a bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg, Mr. Brown served in the Marine Corps in Guam and Northern China during World War II. He was recalled to the military during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, where he met his future wife, Jeanette B. Fields, a schoolteacher.

In the 1950s, Mr. Brown was a sales representative for Atlantic Refining Co. in Allentown. For several years, he was a reporter for the Allentown Morning Call and was vice president of the reporters' union. He then was a correspondent for United Press International before becoming publicity and sales promotion manager for Yale & Towne. He commuted to the company's offices in Philadelphia and New York from his home in Bucks County.

From 1962 until 1979, Mr. Brown was with Rohm & Haas Co. in Philadelphia. After he retired as North American advertising manager, he and his wife operated J & J Communications until 1995.

Mr. Brown was a founder and former treasurer of Planned Parenthood in Doylestown. He was a member of the Doylestown Moose Lodge and the Union Horse Company, a men's social club.

He enjoyed vacation cruises with his wife and tending his vegetable garden, their son Geoffrey said.

In addition to his wife of 53 years and his son, Mr. Brown is survived by another son, Craig; a sister; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Reed & Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Rd., Doylestown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mechanicsville Cemetery in Mechanicsville, Pa.
