Stanley H. Kaplan, 90, founder of the Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Centers Ltd., a test-preparation company, died of natural causes Sunday at his home in New York City.

He started his company from his parents' Brooklyn home in 1938; it later became a chain of more than 100 centers nationally.

Mr. Kaplan, rejected from medical school, believed that students should have access to higher education based on their capabilities, not connections. He began Kaplan centers to help students with SAT and other admissions tests.

In 1984, he sold his business to the Washington Post Co. and dedicated his life to charitable causes. - AP
