Sister Elizabeth Coury, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and a longtime teacher in Catholic elementary and high schools, died Friday at age 79.
Sister Elizabeth Coury, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and a longtime teacher in Catholic elementary and high schools, died Friday at age 79.
Sister Elizabeth, also known as Maria Spiritus, served as an assistant in the Konnections Program at Kennedy-Kenrick High School, in Norristown, from 1984 to last year. The program gives students the chance to discuss their faith and important issues affecting their lives in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Among the elementary schools in which she taught were St. Thomas of Villanova, in Bryn Mawr, and Sacred Heart School, in Nesquehoning, Pa.
She then taught social studies at several Philadelphia Archdiocesan high schools - Archbishop Prendergast, Cardinal O'Hara, Cardinal Dougherty and the former Bishop Kenrick, and at Marion High, in Hometown, Pa. She also taught social studies at Gwynedd-Mercy College.
In 2008, she became a volunteer at Mercy Suburban Regional Cancer Center, in Norristown.
Services: Liturgy of Christian Burial at 7 tonight in the Convent of Mercy Chapel, 515 Montgomery Ave., Merion Station. A viewing will start at 6 p.m. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery.
