Alan Bachman, 38, of Sewell, a director of the outpatient unit at Healthcare Commons, a behavioral health agency in Carneys Point, died Saturday of injuries suffered when he was hit by a car in Monroe Township.
Mr. Bachman was jogging on a bicycle path at 9:10 a.m. and was struck as he crossed Fries Mill Road, police said. He was thrown more than 100 feet and died that night at Cooper University Hospital.
The vehicle, a GMC Envoy, was driven by Curtis P. Turner, 70, of Franklin Township. No arrests have been made, and police are investigating.
Mr. Bachman had jogged at least six days a week since his days as a student athlete in Endwell, N.Y. He was on the track team at Maine-Endwell High School and later at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the school, then completed a master's degree in counseling psychology from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
Mr. Bachman majored in psychology in order to pursue a people-centered career, his wife, Marybeth Putnick, said.
He counseled student athletes at St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa., where he also coached track. He later worked as a substance-abuse counselor in Paterson, N.J.
In 2000, Mr. Bachman moved to the area to work as a crisis counselor for United Behavioral Health in Philadelphia. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he spent much of his time helping airline personnel who were afraid to go back to work and post office staff fearful because of the anthrax scare.
Several months later, Mr. Bachman dealt with his own trauma when his daughter, Sabine, who had a brain injury, died shortly after birth.
Mr. Bachman joined Healthcare Commons last spring.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bachman is survived by sons Theo and Miles; his parents, Dale and Dorothy Bachman; a sister and a brother.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 400 King of Prussia Rd., Radnor. Burial is private.
Memorial donations may be made to Bradley's Buddies, P.O. Box 352, Wenonah, NJ 08090.
