Joseph A. Fluehr Jr., 90, of Philadelphia, former owner of an interior-design firm, died of pneumonia on Friday at Lafayette-Redeemer, a retirement community in Northeast Philadelphia.
Joseph A. Fluehr Jr., 90, of Philadelphia, former owner of an interior-design firm, died of pneumonia on Friday at Lafayette-Redeemer, a retirement community in Northeast Philadelphia.
Mr. Fluehr was the father of the owner of the Joseph A. Fluehr 3d funeral homes in New Britain and Richboro in Bucks County.
Mr. Fluehr graduated in 1937 from North Catholic High School and attended what is now St. Joseph's University.
In 1949, he opened a retail furniture store, J.A. Fluehr, in the Logan section of the city.
In the late 1950s, he closed the store and opened Fluehr & Allen, an interior-design and decoration firm, at 2029 Arch St. in Center City.
Mr. Fluehr moved the firm to Cheltenham in the late 1970s and retired in early 1985, according to a daughter, Mary McQuiggan, who now heads the company.
He was a member of the Lions Club and of the Serra Club, an international organization that encourages religious vocations and is named for the Rev. Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary who worked in what is now California in the 1700s.
Besides his daughter Mary, Mr. Fluehr is survived by his wife of 14 years, June; daughters Edythe Merritt, Eva Albert, and Margaret Bauer; sons Joseph A. 3d, James M. Sr., Thomas A. Sr., and Lawrence; a stepson, Gary Mink; a stepdaughter, Ferne Abramson; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a brother. His first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1988.
A viewing was set from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Joseph A. Fluehr 3d Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd., Richboro, with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, Second Street Pike and Knowles Avenue, Southampton. Burial is to be in St. John Neumann Cemetery, Chalfont.
