The Rev. Ferdinand Negrillos, 92, a former teacher of Spanish at Devon Preparatory School, died of heart disease Saturday at Regina Nursing Center in Norristown.

The Rev. James Shea, headmaster at Devon Prep, said in a statement that Father Negrillos "was the longest-serving member of the Devon Prep Piarist community."

Born in Logroño, capital of the Spanish province of La Rioja, Father Negrillos studied philosophy and theology at a seminary of the Piarists religious order.

After being ordained a Piarist priest in 1941, Father Negrillos taught in secondary schools in the Aragon region through the 1940s.

The Piarists sent him to a religious mission in New York City in the early 1950s, and in 1957, the Piarists who administered and taught at Devon Prep recruited him as a Spanish-language teacher. After retiring from teaching in 1982, Father Negrillos was the school's bookstore manager until 1996. During his teaching years, he also served on weekends at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Phoenixville.

Father Negrillos is survived by a niece in Spain.

A visitation was set from 9 a.m. today at St. Mary's Chapel at Devon Prep, 363 N. Valley Forge Rd., Devon, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the school's gymnasium, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
