Jay Reatard, 29, a Memphis punk rocker known for performing shows and releasing singles at a breakneck pace, has died.
Memphis police said that Mr. Reatard, whose given name was Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., was found dead in his bed Wednesday. Police are investigating the death, but police spokeswoman Jennifer Robinson said foul play was not necessarily suspected.
Friends of Mr. Reatard's told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that the singer had been complaining of flulike symptoms. Results of an autopsy are pending.
Mr. Reatard started recording songs in his bedroom as a teenager and was playing clubs by 15. He released more than 70 records, including 22 albums, with some of the rarer ones now fetching hundreds of dollars on eBay. (See more at his Web site via http://go.philly.com/jay) - AP
