Elizabeth Sack, 82, of Haddon Heights, a longtime cashier at John's Market known for her blunt personality and greeting customers by name, died of cancer Monday, April 26, at her home.

For almost 20 years, Mrs. Sack, known as Betty, ran the register at the grocery in Haddon Heights. She loved chatting with customers and catching up on the latest news in town, her son Joe said.

"It's a small mom-and-pop store; everyone knows everyone," her son said. "Some people go in two, three times each day . . . everyone stopped in for everything."

Mrs. Sack was popular with the customers, said longtime employee Carol Vail.

"She was very spunky," Vail said. "She liked most people, and if she didn't, you knew it . . . she was funny."

Elizabeth Power was born and raised in Bridgeton, N.J., and moved to Barrington when she was a teenager. In 1946, she met Harvey Sack at a Barrington ice cream parlor, and they married in 1948.

In 1960, the couple opened Harvey's Card Shop in Barrington and worked there daily until 1972, when they sold the business.

After working at several places, including a deli, Mrs. Sack started at John's Market in the early 1990s. She retired about a year ago because of failing health.

In addition to her husband and son, Mrs. Sack is survived by a daughter, Kathleen; another son, Conrad; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held between 8 and 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Terranova Funeral Home, 402 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights. A funeral will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Locustwood Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
