Since 2005, Mr. Mengel had operated MKB Property Maintenance, a landscaping business in West Chester. He and his crew tended the lawns and landscapes in residential developments, for commercial properties and for homes, his father, Kevin Sr., said. The firm also built retaining walls and patios and in the winter did snow removal, Kevin Mengel Sr. said.
MKB was named for Mr. Mengel's three children: Mercedes, 12; Kevin, 10; and Billy, 6.
Mr. Mengel graduated from West Chester East High School in 1995 and then attended the Automotive Training Center in Exton. He worked for other landscaping firms before starting his own, his father said.
When he was 12, his father bought him an all-terrain vehicle. Riding and racing ATVs became his passion, his father said, and he had two dozen trophies from races he won around the country. In recent years, he loved riding with his children, his father said.
Before owning his own business, Mr. Mengel had been a volunteer with the Good Will Fire Company.
Survivors, in addition to his father and children, include his mother, Kathleen Barton, and her husband, Richard; a brother; and a sister.
An employee of his landscaping company, Stephen Shappell, has been charged with murder in his death. Mr. Mengel's wife, Morgan, has been charged with conspiracy in the case. Both are in custody.
Donations may be made to the Kevin Mengel Jr. Children's Bank Trust, Penn Liberty Bank, 210 Font Rd., Downingtown, Pa. 19335.
