Manly Y. Brunt Jr., 83, of Wayne, a former psychiatrist at two hospitals in the Philadelphia region, died of complications from lymphoma Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

He joined the staff of Bryn Mawr in 1964, according to a son, Kenneth. He was director of the department of psychiatry from 1975 to 1986 and president of the medical staff from 1983 to 1985.

Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., Dr. Brunt attended Wake Forest University, but in his sophomore year enlisted in the Navy.

His son said that even though his father lacked an undergraduate degree, he performed well on Navy aptitude tests and was given the chance to attend medical school through the service.

Dr. Brunt graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest in 1948.

In 1949, he became a resident at Graduate Hospital, his son said, and then fulfilled his military obligation in the Army Reserve Medical Corps at Fort Benning, Ga., from 1951 to 1955.

Dr. Brunt worked at the Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital from 1955 to 1962, first as clinical director and then as executive medical officer.

He was a member of the Merion Cricket Club and the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club.

Besides his son, Dr. Brunt is survived by his wife, Jacklyn; sons William and Douglas; a daughter, Diane; and a grandson.

A memorial was Friday, Aug. 6.
