Harry C. Caparo Jr., 61, of Conshohocken, chairman of Coldwell Banker Preferred, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, of cancer at home.
In 1976, Mr. Caparo opened Caparo Real Estate & Insurance with his brother, Chuck, on Maple Street in Conshohocken. Two years later, they moved to larger facilities on Fayette Street, and in 1990 the company became an affiliate of Coldwell Banker.
The firm has offices in Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware Counties, in Old City, and on the Avenue of the Arts, said Mr. Caparo's son, H. Daniel, senior vice president of Coldwell Banker Preferred.
Mr. Caparo had a "can-do" attitude and found creative methods to sell homes in the most challenging times, his son said.
Mr. Caparo graduated from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, where he played soccer and wrestled. He sold encyclopedias door-to-door at night while attending the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, now Philadelphia University. He later sold vacuum cleaners at the Sears store in Norristown and was a real estate agent for local firms before establishing his own company.
He loved to travel the world and was a passionate golfer who for 30 years was a member of the Plymouth Country Club.
In addition to his son and brother, Mr. Caparo is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathleen Cumens Caparo; his father, Harry Sr.; a daughter, Lisa Carlomagno; a sister; and four grandchildren.
