Richard C. Unger, 85, car dealer for 40 years
Richard C. Unger, 85, former head of a family-owned car dealership in Phoenixville, died of pulmonary fibrosis Monday, Aug. 30, at his home in Dunwoody Village, a retirement community in Newtown Square. He had lived there for three years.

Mr. Unger, a resident of Paoli from 1957 to 2007, succeeded his father as president of Unger Chevrolet in Phoenixville in 1948. He sold the business in 1988. Mr. Unger also was a director of Fidelity Bank in Philadelphia, said a son, Richard C. Unger Jr.
Mr. Unger graduated from Phoenixville High School in 1942 and was a Navy helmsman on a supply ship in the Caribbean. He was in officer-training classes at the University of Pennsylvania and then at Swarthmore College until World War II ended.
Mr. Unger took over the family business after earning a bachelor's degree in economics at Swarthmore.
His son said Mr. Unger, "though a short man, not ever a high scorer," had been captain of championship high school and college basketball teams.
From 1975 to 1978, Mr. Unger was president of the Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, where he was a member for more than 40 years.
He was president from 1979 to 1981 of the Ozone Club, a Quaker golfing group based at Swarthmore College, and a member of the executive committee of the Golf Association of Philadelphia in Broomall.
Mr. Unger was president of the Phoenixville Chamber of Commerce and the Phoenixville Rotary Club in the 1960s, and a board member of the Phoenixville YMCA.
Besides his son Richard, Mr. Unger is survived by his wife, Laura; sons John, Peter, and James; a sister; and eight grandchildren. The Ungers' 60th wedding anniversary would have been Thursday, Sept. 9.
A memorial service was set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Valley Friends Meeting, 1121 Old Eagle School Rd., Wayne.
