Marc T. "Mandy" Mandeville, 37, of Wilmington, a science teacher and coach at Episcopal Academy, died of cancer Saturday, Oct. 9, at St. Francis Hospital Hospice in Wilmington.

For 10 years, until June, Mr. Mandeville taught biology and earth and life sciences to ninth and 10th graders at Episcopal.

He coached baseball in the upper school for several years and then for four years coached ice hockey. He built a robust program in the upper school and helped develop the program in the middle school, said Kim Piersall, director of middle school athletics.

Every year, Mr. Mandeville and students created a video of Episcopal sporting events for the pep rally preceding a weekend of competition with rivals Haverford and Agnes Irwin Schools. The video became increasingly elaborate and students looked forward to it, Piersall said.

Mr. Mandeville was diagnosed with colorectal cancer more than two years ago. He participated in a cycling event in August 2009 for the Livestrong Challenge, a cancer fund-raiser in Blue Bell. In August 2010, he organized Team M-Power, composed of 130 Episcopal students, parents and friends who participated in running, walking, and biking events and raised $250,000. He was able to bicycle 20 miles in the challenge, Piersall said.

A native of Rhode Island, Mr. Mandeville earned a bachelor's degree in fisheries and marine science from the University of Rhode Island, where he was president of Sigma Chi. He earned a master's degree in education from St. Joseph's University.

Since 2000, Mr. Mandeville had been married to Megan Werner, a physician. As students, they met at the XO Cafe in Providence, R.I., where she was a hostess and he was a waiter. He loved fishing, family vacations in Ocean City, N.J., and playing, reading, and gardening with their children, his wife said.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mandeville is survived by a son, Christian; daughters Lia and Olivia; his parents, Elaine and Thomas; a brother; and a grandmother.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the Class of 1944 Chapel, Episcopal Academy, 1785 Bishop White Dr., Newtown Square.
