Wasyl Doroshenko, 85, a teacher and printer in the Philadelphia Ukrainian community, died Friday, Nov. 26 - his birthday - of a heart attack in Jeanes Hospital, Philadelphia.

Wasyl Doroshenko, 85, a teacher and printer in the Philadelphia Ukrainian community, died Friday, Nov. 26 - his birthday - of a heart attack in Jeanes Hospital, Philadelphia.

Mr. Doroshenko was born and raised in Ukraine, where he trained as a printer.

In 1949, he emigrated to the United States with his wife, Alexandra, and daughter Vera Shapowalenko. The family lived with Father Anthony Stangry, then pastor of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral Church in Philadelphia.

Mr. Doroshenko worked in the church printing shop before landing a job as a Linotype operator for the Ukrainian newspaper America.

He attended the Fleisher Art School and the former Ukrainian Art School. Mr. Doroshenko taught lithography and graphic arts at both, his daughter said.

In 1960, Mr. Doroshenko and his wife operated a print shop in a former orphanage on Linley Avenue near LaSalle University. He later moved his operation to North Philadelphia. He retired in 1990.

Mr. Doroshenko was a member of the Ukrainian men's choir Prometheus for many years and was an accomplished guitarist.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Chrystyna Standrytchuk; and four sons, George, Roman, Alexander, and Mark; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A 10 a.m. viewing Saturday, Dec. 4, will be followed by an 11 a.m. Requiem Liturgy at St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1013 Fox Chase Rd., Jenkintown. Interment will be in Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge.
