John R. Boles, 65, of Ivyland, a retired high school teacher and winning soccer coach, died Monday, April 4, at home of moyamoya disease, a progressive brain disorder.
John R. Boles, 65, of Ivyland, a retired high school teacher and winning soccer coach, died Monday, April 4, at home of moyamoya disease, a progressive brain disorder.
In 22 seasons as the men's soccer coach at Temple University, Mr. Boles compiled a 210-110-23 record. He was NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region coach of the year in 1985, when the Owls went undefeated and received an NCAA tournament bid.
In 1995, he retired from coaching for medical reasons, and in 1997, his illness forced him to retire from his 28-year teaching career. He had taught civics and history in several schools in the Philadelphia School District, including Germantown and Lankenau Motivation High Schools.
In the summers, he was director of Breezy Point Day Camp in Langhorne for more than 20 years.
Mr. Boles played soccer for North Catholic High School. He was an all-American player at Temple and in 1985 was inducted into the Temple University Athletics Hall of Fame.
After graduating, he played pro soccer with the Philadelphia Ukrainians and the Philadelphia Spartans.
He encouraged his four children to play soccer and followed the sport on ESPN, his son Jeffrey said.
Mr. Boles enjoyed family vacations in Ocean City, N.J.
In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Evelyn Keppler Boles; sons John and Jamie; a daughter, Jennifer Siwak; two brothers; two sisters; and eight grandchildren.
Friends may call from 1:15 to 4:15 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Campbell & Thomas Funeral Home, 905 Second Street Pike, Richboro. A Funeral Mass will be said at 5 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 654 Hatboro Rd, Richboro.
