James A. Love | Church volunteer, 90

James A. Love, 90, formerly of Springfield, Delaware County, a retired finance company supervisor and church volunteer, died of cancer Monday, May 30, at Riddle Village, a retirement community in Media.

James A. Love, 90, formerly of Springfield, Delaware County, a retired finance company supervisor and church volunteer, died of cancer Monday, May 30, at Riddle Village, a retirement community in Media.

Mr. Love graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific aboard the destroyer Phelps.

After his discharge, he joined Public Finance Co. in Philadelphia. He retired as a supervisor in 1985.

He married the former Betty J. Dolan in 1948. The couple had met in the fourth grade at Blessed Virgin Mary School in Darby. In the early 1950s, they moved to a new home in Springfield, Delaware County, and in 1955 they became founding members of St. Kevin Roman Catholic Church in Springfield.

Mr. Love and his wife attended daily Mass at St. Kevin, where he was an altar server, usher, lector, eucharistic minister, choir member, and collection counter. Until eight years ago, he trained and scheduled lectors, eucharistic ministers, and ushers.

He helped establish Knights of Columbus Council 4500 at the church and was council treasurer for 52 years.

Mr. Love was on the committee for Class of '39 West Catholic reunions and cochaired biannual reunions of his Phelps shipmates.

He and his wife moved to Riddle Village, where he was involved in many activities, 15 years ago.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Love is survived by a brother, William; and nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday, June 6, at St. Kevin Church, 200 W. Sproul Rd., Springfield. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
