Harry Field, 91, a dentist in Northeast Philadelphia for more than 40 years, died of cancer Wednesday, May 11, at McKnight Place Extended Care in St. Louis.

Dr. Field opened a dental office in Frankford in 1948 and opened a second office in the Summerdale section of Philadelphia in 1951. After several years, he closed the Frankford office. He practiced in Summerdale until he was in his early 70s.

Dr. Field grew up in Overbrook Park, graduated from Overbrook High School, and attended what is now La Salle University.

During World War II, he was a medical technician in the Army in Texas and Arkansas.

After his discharge, he graduated from Temple University Dental School.

In 1949, he married Anita Krenvel, whom he had met on a blind date. They raised a family in the Castor Gardens section of Northeast Philadelphia. She died in 1988. In 1996, he married Dena Sitner. She died in 2000. Both women were teachers in Philadelphia public schools.

As a young man, Dr. Field played bass with dance bands. He later played the violin to entertain his family and residents of senior centers, and was a talented watercolorist.

After he retired, he spent summers in Margate, N.J., and winters in Boynton Beach, Fla. He loved boating and fishing, and rode his bike on the Boardwalk in Ventnor until he was 90, his daughter, Denise Field, said.

In addition to his daughter, Dr. Field is survived by a son, Randy; four grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Sandy Sugarman.

A funeral was Sunday, May 15, at Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks Memorial Chapel in Philadelphia. Burial was in Montefiore Cemetery, Jenkintown.
