Nancy M. Foehl, 64, of Media and Galena, Md., an office manager and community volunteer, died Sunday, July 21, of pancreatic cancer at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The former Nancy Merrill fought the cancer for 15 months, said her husband, lawyer Gene A. Foehl. "During that time, she never lost her compassion and caring for others, taking strength in her faith and making it easier on all those around her," he said.

Over several decades, she was the office manager in his law practices - Gene A. Foehl & Associates, and Foehl & Eyre P.C., both in Media.

Before that, she worked in systems analysis for Insurance Company of North America, Western Savings Bank in Philadelphia, and Mutual Benefit Life in Newark, N.J.

Mrs. Foehl read the Holy Bible cover to cover for 30 years and used her faith to serve the community.

She was a volunteer fiscal officer for Unity Center Inc., a nonprofit that provides help in many forms, mostly to residents of Chester.

She participated in creating the Foehl Foundation to support local charitable activities.

She was active in First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Delaware County, as president of the board of deacons, a member of the pastor search committee, and a part of the prison ministry program.

Later, she served on the vestry, as cochair of the Adult Christian Education Committee, and as a worship leader in Shrewsbury Parish, in Kennedyville, Md.

With her husband, she founded, operated, and led sessions for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Presbyterian Expression of Marriage Encounter for almost 10 years.

She was a Cub Scouts den mother and was pleased that some of the boys went on to become Eagle Scouts, including her son, Christopher.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., she was raised in Massachusetts. Mrs. Foehl graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in English from Hood College, Frederick, Md., after attending Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

She enjoyed her second home along the Sassafras River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and made the house into a youth and church retreat center.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 41 years and son, are a daughter, Erica Foehl Weihermuller; two grandchildren; and a sister.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Media Presbyterian Church, 30 E. Baltimore Ave., Media. A memorial service will follow at 11.

Another visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at Shrewsbury Parish, 12824 Shrewsbury Church Rd., Kennedyville, Md. A memorial service will be at 11. In both cases, a reception will follow the service.
