Janet Madorna Viola, 53, an information-systems technician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, died of lung cancer Tuesday, Aug. 6, at her home in Medford.
"She was sick for half her life" with multiple sclerosis, her husband, William, said in a phone interview, yet "managed to go on" with her career.
Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Viola graduated from what is now SS. Neumann Goretti High School in 1977. She earned a bachelor's in medical technology at Thomas Jefferson University in 1981 and an M.B.A. at Temple University in 1989.
After a year as a medical technologist at a private blood laboratory in Philadelphia, she began her Children's Hospital career in 1984, briefly in its clinical chemistry lab.
She then worked first in the laboratory information system and then in the hospital information system, retiring in 2012, her husband said.
"For the longest time," he said, "she was the interface between the doctors and the information-systems people in getting a software application up."
Such applications, he said, were "the software interface between the patients and the doctors."
She was certified as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Besides her husband, William J., she is survived by her parents, Thomas and Maria Madorna; son William T.; daughter Marissa; and a brother and sister.
A visitation was set from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at St. Mary of the Lakes Church, 40 Jackson Rd., Medford, before a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. there, with interment at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
