Dori J. Maynard, 56, a journalist and champion of diversity in news coverage, died Tuesday at her home in Oakland, Calif., from complications of lung cancer.
Ms. Maynard, daughter of the late former Oakland Tribune owner Robert Maynard, had worked at the Detroit Free Press, the Bakersfield Californian, and the Patriot Ledger, in Quincy, Mass.
She was a Neiman fellow at Harvard University in 1993. At the time of her death, she was the president of the Maynard Institute, the nation's oldest organization focusing on ensuring that newspapers, magazines, and other news outlets accurately portray overlooked communities. - AP
