William H. Logan III, 82, of Yeadon, a funeral director and former Yeadon Borough councilman, died Sunday, Oct. 25, of complications from Parkinson's disease at Chester County Hospital.

Mr. Logan's life was defined by service to his family, country, church, and community.

A native of Yeadon, he made his living as the owner and operator of Logan Funeral Homes, with funeral parlors in Philadelphia, Havertown, and Exton.

Starting in 1895, the Logan family operated a funeral home in the 2400 block of Lombard Street to serve the Schuylkill and Devil's Pocket communities of Philadelphia. Later, the family expanded to include operations in Delaware and Chester Counties. The Yeadon location eventually was sold to another funeral director.

A strong, compassionate man, Mr. Logan "was there for families in their darkest hours," his relatives said in a statement. "It was his calling in life."

Eventually, he retired to West Chester. During the summer, he vacationed in Sea Isle City, N.J.

Mr. Logan served on Yeadon's borough council in the early 1980s. He was president of the Yeadon/Lansdowne Jaycees and the Yeadon Kiwanis Club, and also led the Yeadon Flag Day Committee.

As a boy, Mr. Logan attended St. Louis parochial school in Yeadon and was a 1951 graduate of West Catholic High School for Boys. He attended Villanova University until he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Afterward, he returned to Villanova and graduated with the Class of 1957.

Over the years, he continued to support the St. Louis and West Catholic school communities. He volunteered for the West Catholic reunion committee for the Class of '51 and as chairman of the St. Louis parish anniversary celebrations.

He also was a longtime president of the St. Louis Holy Name Society, and spent years as the St. Louis athletic director and coach of the boys' basketball teams.

Known for his dry sense of humor, Mr. Logan was asked to appear often as a master of ceremonies for events.

"He had a gift for keeping a crowd laughing, both as MC and in his personal life," his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathleen Mendte Logan; sons William H. IV, John, and Daniel; daughters Jeanne Monichetti, Tara Elinski, and Katherine "Kristi" McKenzie; 18 grandchildren; and a sister.

A visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., at the Logan Funeral Home, 57 S. Eagle Rd., Havertown, is to be followed by an 11 a.m. Saturday Funeral Mass at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, 821 W. Cobbs Creek Parkway, Yeadon. Interment is in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.
