'Cliff' Lewis, doctor and Malvern councilman

Ludwig Clifford Lewis Jr., 91, of Mantoloking, N.J., a former Malvern Borough Council president, a Navy veteran, and a retired doctor, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Jersey Shore Medical Center of complications from a stroke.

Dr. Lewis, known as "Cliff," had a general practice in Malvern for 46 years. He also served on the council for six years and was its president for one term.

Dr. Lewis was born on Jan. 17, 1924, in Villanova to Ludwig Clifford and Lucy S. Jefferys Lewis.

He graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1941, when the campus was in Merion. Four years later, he graduated from Yale University with honors.

From 1943 to 1946, he served in the Navy.

He graduated from medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and began his career by delivering babies. He made sure he was available for his patients, said his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline.

"If someone came with a cut and it was the middle of dinner, he'd stop and sew them up," she said. "He was a good old-fashioned country doctor."

After he retired in 2000, Dr. Lewis moved to Mantoloking, at the Shore, where he liked creating gardens of chrysanthemums and dahlias.

He enjoyed golf, fishing, canoeing, duplicate bridge, squash, and rum drinks. He was a fan of the Phillies and the Eagles, and liked watching the Penn Relays.

He sailed on Barnegat Bay for 80 years and competed in the Barnegat Bay E-Scow fleet for more than 40, sailing his Aurora and Waanataa.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Lewis is survived by sons Steven C., Mark G., Jeffrey D., Eric C., and Evan B.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a memorial service in early summer in Mantoloking.
