Richard B. Lieb, 67, of Valley Forge, director and former executive vice president of SEI Investments in Oaks, died in his sleep Monday, Jan. 25, in San Francisco, where he had been visiting his son.
The cause of his death was not immediately known pending an investigation, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office said.
Mr. Lieb was born in Boston and grew up working in his family's delicatessen in Belmont, Mass.
He received a bachelor's degree in history from Duke University, where he developed a lifelong passion for Duke basketball.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps at graduation in 1969, and served for four years. He was an infantry platoon commander in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V. On his return stateside, he was assigned to Philadelphia to oversee Marine recruiting in an eight-state area.
In 1973, he joined the Marine Reserve, eventually retiring with the rank of major.
Mr. Lieb earned a master's degree in 1975 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1976, he joined SEI Investments, moving quickly from a job in programming to running conversions, operations, and an insurance market unit. He then took over the private banking segment as president of systems and services.
Mr. Lieb retired from full-time duty in 2002, but continued to serve on SEI's board of directors, which he had joined in 1994.
"In both the Marine Corps and at SEI, his energy, work ethic, and keen sense of humor set him apart as a leader and mentor," his family said.
Mr. Lieb served on the board of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the Corporate Council of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke.
He enjoyed travel, reading military history, and telling a great story.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathryn Crommelin Lieb; daughters Suzanne Lieb and Amy; son Benjamin; and a sister.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Temple Brith Achim, 481 S. Gulph Rd., King of Prussia. Interment is private.
Donations in his name may be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, 909 N. Washington St., Suite 400, Alexandria, Va. 22314.
