Thomas S. McGuire, 47, of Broomall, a supervisor at United Parcel Service in West Chester, died at home Monday of mesothelioma.
Mr. McGuire graduated from Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Delaware County. He loaded trucks at night at UPS while a student at West Chester University. Later, he dropped out of school and worked full time for UPS in West Chester, in South Philadelphia, and at the airport. In the 1990s, while working, he earned a bachelor's degree in business from Eastern College in St. Davids.
Mr. McGuire was the company's liaison for the United Way of Chester County. He never missed a day's work in 26 years until he was diagnosed with his illness in July 2007, said his wife, Marjorie Duddy McGuire.
A devoted father, he attended all his sons' ice hockey games when they played for Archbishop Carroll High School, the Haverford Hawks, and the Springfield Hockey League, and cheered for his daughter, a figure skater at the IceWorks Skating Club in Aston.
He loved vacations with his children, including biking down a volcano in Hawaii, his wife said. He made sure they saw the other side of resort destinations, she said, and showed them impoverished areas in Haiti and the devastation to peasant shacks after a hurricane in the Virgin Islands.
In addition to his wife of 22 years, Mr. McGuire is survived by sons Michael and Thomas Jr.; a daughter, Kelly; two brothers; and a sister.
