Letters: Some questions about Carlos Mota's high Internet bill

KUDOS to Verizon for taking care of Carlos Mota's wireless Internet bill. But I'm troubled by some of the things reported in this story.

KUDOS to Verizon for taking care of Carlos Mota's wireless Internet bill. But I'm troubled by some of the things reported in this story.

How can a person live in the United States for 23 years and not be able to speak any English? If Mr. Mota came to this country for a better life - I won't ask if he's legal - wouldn't you think he'd embrace America for giving him an opportunity and want to learn English? If for no other reason than to communicate with other inhabitants of this great country without having his daughter nearby constantly to translate everything.

Also, I find it hard to believe that he ran up that huge bill by being on the Internet for less than two hours - even if he was in the Dominican Republic. I think there is more to this story. Does Joey Vento know about this guy?

Too much race

I read your opinion section on a regular basis. Why must you print so many opinions regarding race?

It is not surprising that race relations have taken a step in the wrong direction. Can't your readers respond to criticism or adulation for President Obama without throwing the race card? (And who the heck is letter-writer Harriet Brown? Is she a real person or just somebody from the DN who wants to fan the fire?)

Tim Baldwin, King of Prussia

In seems to me that there may be a new form of discrimination in the Philadelphia court system, namely the juries for the death penalty.

Can it be that when a minority person when selected will not put to death one of their own? In addition, police officers are not loved in certain communities.

We are talking about Officer John Pawlowski and Mr. Scrugs, his killer.
